Matouschek and rasul (2008: 3 hypotheses: Exogenous payoff marriage as a rite of passage into adulthood and social approval of couple. Commitment device marriage promotes relationship specific investments (locked into relationship) Signaling device state publicly the extent of one"s love for the partner: majority of couples selected the commitment device in 2008. Other reasons include: religious reasons, emotional security, companionship, starting a family, intense physical attraction, economic security, family pressure, escape from parent home, rebound, rescue from unsatisfying life. Passionate love brain is flooded with happy couples (brain is adaptable and gets used to dopamine and eventually fades away which is where companionate love sets in)
