Hdfs 428 - lecture 4 - prenatal development. Total of 40 weeks from the beginning of the woman"s last menstrual period. This is an estimate, not all pregnancies last the same amount of time. Divided into periods of the zygote, embryo, and fetus. Approximately 60-70% of fertilized eggs do not make it past this stage. Embryo - 2 through 8 weeks after conception. Foundations of for all body structures are in place. Goes from 1 oz to about 7 lbs in this stage. Can also be divided into periods called trimesters. First trimester - 1st day of last menstrual period to the end of the 13th week. Second trimester - 14 weeks to 27 weeks. Third trimester - 28 weeks to delivery. Before this, the fetus would be premature. The earlier the baby is born, the more issues will arise. Physically often smaller, even when fully grown.
