Document Summary

Me 300 - lecture 1 thermodynamic concepts. Thermodynamics is the science dealing with the relationship of heat and mechanical energy, and the conversion of one into the other. Physical frameworks for analysis (closed) system: a specifically identified fixed mass of material separated from its surroundings by a real or imaginary boundary. *note: mass is constant, meaning no mass transfer into or out of the system, but energy can be transferred freely into and out of the system. Control volume (open system): a region of space separated from its surroundings by a real or imaginary boundary, called the control surface, across which mass may pass. *note: both mass and energy can be transferred freely into and out of the control volume. The systems include the compression and expansion stages since the valves are closed during these strokes and no mass can escape the cylinder. Energy, however, can be transferred from the surroundings to the cylinder and vice versa.
