For the most part, there is a lot of continuity in american elections. But there have been changes made and so the text divides the history of american campaigns into four eras. Candidates did not really campaign but focused efforts at state legislatures (obviously). Citizenship rules change and more people start to vote. So more people voting and electors chosen by popular vote now . 1824: election went to the house, jackson had the most electoral votes but not the majority. He claims government being controlled by northeast commercial interests at the detriment of the common folks .
