Document Summary

Psych 100 lecture 18 depth perception and the other senses. Monocular cues: cues in the environment that suggest depth and can be seen by only one eye (linear perspective, juxtaposition) Binocular cues: uses both eyes: convergence: eyes angle inward as an object gets closer to us, retinal disparity: because each retina is a few inches apart, they have slightly different images and this helps with depth perception. Illusions are created using mostly monocular depth cues. What we perceive is not always reality. Sound waves enter ear and are transferred to the temporal lobes for processing. Airborne molecules enter the nose and are transferred to the olfactory bulb in the brain for processing. Processed directly through the amygdala, hypothalamus, and hippocampus (limbic system) Basic tastes: sweet, bitter, salty, sour: savory has also recently been added. Taste buds: on the tongue, code for taste which is processed in the somatosensory cortex. Flavor: influenced by taste, smell, and visual cues.
