PSYCH 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Central Nervous System, Myelin, White Matter
Document Summary
Psych 100 lecture 4 chapter 3 (biology of the mind) Central nervous system (cns): the brain and spinal cord. Peripheral nervous system: nerves that connect the cns to the rest of the body: branches that come out of the cns to send signals. Two subdivisions of peripheral ns: somatic ns (nervous system): nerves under conscious control (motor movements, sense receptors) Ex: deciding to wave your arm (intentionally moving your body in a certain way: autonomic ns: controls involuntary actions (heart, glands, digestion) We don"t have to think about them before performing. Two subdivisions of the autonomic ns: them: sympathetic ns: activates internal organs during times of danger, stress, arousal (activates the fight or flight response) Inborn reaction to get ourselves out of danger. Ex: hiking and you see a mountain lion, your sympathetic ns will activate: parasympathetic ns: reverses the affects of the sympathetic ns (returns body back to normal) Operating most of the time (extremely important)
