Document Summary

5 steps to getting help: notice event if you don"t see the emergency, you"re not going to help sometimes the more people who are around, the more people obstruct views, and the less people will see to help. Students not in a hurry: 63% of students stopped to help man in pain. Students in a hurry: only 10% of students stop to help the man many didn"t even notice the man laying there: interpreting the event as an emergency. Even seemingly obvious events might not appear to be emergencies to others. Pluralistic ignorance bystanders assume nothing is wrong because nobody else looks concerned; more likely when there is a large group of people. Ex: restaurant video example where man fell and nobody got up to help right away. Ex: smoke filling room study: assume responsibility. Avoid diffusion of responsibility the more people there are, the less responsible each individual feels.
