SOC 119 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Death Of Eric Garner, Race Card
Document Summary
The shooting deaths of both michael brown in ferguson, missouri, and eric. Garner in new york city have sparked controversy within the nation around issues of racial tension and police brutality toward racial minorities, particularly african. Consequently, this controversy has ignited tensions between police departments and protestors around the world. These events have led to the public, majorly the african american public, questioning how public policy can further address an issue that seems to have grown completely out of control. The film power of illusion, episode 2: the story we tell, suggests that today"s racial prejudice is derived from prejudice that still lingers since abolition more than 150 years ago. The community is still largely sensitive on the topic of race. American society has not quite seemed how to handle many situations involving race, the shootings are perfect examples of this.
