Antigone, a strong example of aristotelian tragedy. The city dionysia, the chorus, and spectacle. Aristotle vs. plato on the value of theatre. Sophocles" antigone 441 bce and aristotle"s poetics 335 bce. 6 elements of tragedy: plot, character: characters are revealed in drama by the choices they make about what is moral and what is not. Creon makes moral choice to enforce the laws of the state. Antigone makes the moral decision to break the law and burry her brother: thought. Theme, idea, the ideas in the play that are different to everyone and mean different things to everyone but can transcend time: language, music, spectacle: the most important aspect of greek theatre. Sophocles was a war hero, a man of the state. Aristotle was a philosopher; he was not athenian. Ex: romeo and juliet set in los angeles; hamlet set in new york: historical mashups are great for art, but bad for history.
