Snow and cholera: germ theory- 1880s louis pastor, prevalent theory was that the cause of all disease was miasma (bad air, 1840s dr. Snow noticed members of a household exhibited clinical signs of cholera but none of the nurses or doctors that visited contracted it and therefore questioned the spread of the disease via air. Gridded the area, saw that the cases were clustered around shared water supplies and wells. Showed association of the prevalence of disease with the water supply of the patients. Took water pump handles so they had to go to clean water supply. Rate of new cases of cholera significantly reduced. Only when the interaction of all three are optimal will there be clinical disease. Purpose of epidemiological examination: provide data for rational decisions concerning. Analytical epidemiology: identify factors that might cause the disease, test a hypothesis with data. Measurement of disease frequency: morbidity- the level of clinical disease in a population.
