Document Summary

Host cells: have receptors on surface that make it possible for viruses or bacteria to attach, surface could allow a virus or bacterium to penetrate into the cell. Protozoa: single cell organism, may be capable of living or surviving freely in environment, may live in host cell but doesn"t have to. Coccidia, giardia: invade cells like in digestion tract. Can live and reproduce outside of cells in environment or artificial media: mycoplasma. No cell wall; plasma membrane is the limiting membrane. Because it lacks a cell wall, drugs typically used are not effective because they degrade cell walls: rickettsia. Don"t grow outside body or living cells. Not capable of living or reproducing outside of intact cells: prions. Rabies- can only live outside of living body for around 15 minutes. Saprophyte or pathogen: any organism present that is not producing disease, part of normal flora, what makes it a pathogen is its ability to produce disease.
