Document Summary

Sex determination depends on the sex chromosomes contributed to the zygote by the sperm and egg: x & y o o. Sex chromosomes are not true homologues they have different genes! o. Aren"t important for everyday function because women live fine without it. Most of the genes on the y chromosome are affiliated with being male: x chromosomes. Most genes on it have nothing to do with sex. Sex chromosomes pair and segregate in meiosis (but do not recombine) o o. Segregate during meiosis 1: males have 2 gametes: x & y. The sex of the offspring depend on which sperm fertilizes the egg o. Sex chromosome abnormalities can result from nondisjunction during meiosis: nondisjunction. Anytime in meiosis when chromosomes are supposed to separate but don"t. Can happen in both meiosis 1 & 2 o. The result is chromosomes that were supposed to split into two different daughter cell, in the same cell.
