BIOSC 0370 Lecture 11: Chapter 11
Document Summary
Leaving habitat of origin: often a way to avoid things like, high competition or predation risks. Interbreeding: where you may share genes with a lot of other organisms, estimating distribution properties, quantifying location/number of individuals, censuses, counting all individuals in a population, usually not feasible. Surveys: count a subset of the population, can then estimate abundance, a number of techniques can be used to estimate population sizes & densities, area or volume based, count number of individuals within a limited area, linear transect. Ideal free distribution can be demonstrated artificially with stickleback fish in an aquarium: fish distribute themselves in a ratio that follows food availability. Ideal free distribution: not always seen in nature though, why not, competition with other individuals will always be there, may not be aware of other habitats around, predators might preclude you from an area.
