This means that talking about moisture requires discussion of temperature as well. The northern edge of distribuion of the pine is limited by winter drought. In the north the soil gets very cold. But the pine needles are sill photosynthesizing during which the stomata open on the mine. But with the stomata open, the plant loses water by evapotranspiraion. If the soil temp is too low, the root system shuts down and no longer takes up water.
