Exam three is from logisic growth with meaning of k up to the material on monday. Now we are looking at herbivory parasiism and disease and mutualism. Difers from typical predaion because plants are modular. But we can think of the interacion as the same because it is a plus minus ecological interacion. What we didn"t talk about how animal prey defend themselves. Plants can"t run away but they have structural defenses such as thorns, hairs, tough foliage, and others. If we look at plants, a lot of them have chemical adaptaions which can make herbivores sick. There are a lot of diferent types of these chemicals. It has vesigial spines which have no structural defenses. There are pig relaives called peccary that eat the juicy cactus and it trips then it may get eaten. One idea is that they are metabolic wastes stored and later coopted for defense. The second hypothesis is that these compounds developed solely for defense.
