Why do we need an immune system: protection, against other life forms, they want our resources, for their own cell respiration, fermentation. First line of defense ~ saliva : as a kid tendency to do this when you cut your finger, lysozyme in saliva and tears, breaks down bacterial cell wall. First line of defense ~ stomach acid : swallowed bacteria broken down by strong acids in the stomach. Natural killer cells for second line of defense: perforin perforates target cell, store granules in natural killer cells releases granzymes, creates holes in cell membrane (constructed by little barrel-shape forming rods) Hematopoietic stem cell blood forming cell: can change into a type of blood cell depending on exposure to chemicals.
