Document Summary
Proteins have many di erent functions in the cell. Some types of binding proteins are receptors bind to signal molecules lectins bind to carbohydrates they contain polar amino acids because carbohydrates have many carboxyl groups transporters bind to small molecules and deliver them. L = ligand theta = (occupied binding sites) / (total binding sites) = [pl] / [p] + [l] Ligand binding is described by kd (dissociation constant) equilibrium constant for the release of ligand. Kd = [p][l] / [pl] concentration of l when half of the binding sites are occupied = kd, half saturated. Kd = [l] when theta = 0. 5 the lower the kd, the higher a nity for a ligand. Kd can be determined by a binding curve. Lower kd = higher a nity of protein for ligand (binds more tightly) X has a higher a nity lower kd takes less ligand to reach half saturation.
