The art, technique, and practice of assembling distinct pieces of film (shots) into a sequence. Through editing we can create spaces that don"t really exist: creative geography. Implying that a room is in a certain building, or establishing shot of nyc even if they are filming in. Creating and imaginary relationship between a face of a person and then a bowl of soup with no other evidence presented. Same face shot then combined with a dead baby, new idea is grief instead of hunger. Hitchcock and girl with baby versus girl in a bikini. Stationary shot- old guy smiling: temporal relations between shot a and b, duration- plot manipulates time. Condensation- most common (6 months worth of story, condensed) Real-time: cross-cutting, parallel editing, editing shapes chronology. Flash-forward: editing condenses or expands durations. Elliptical editing- presents and action in such a way that it consumes less time on the screen than is does in the story (ellipses)
