The word nickelodeon comes from the earliest small theaters which cost a nickle to enter. Distribution: 1902: first film exchange set up so exhibitors had steady stream of movies to show. The exchange bought movies from producers and rented to exhbitors. Production: edison, biograph, and vitagraph, three major producers. Kinetographic films the first no onsite film studio. Films from 50 ft 1000 feet w/ basic continuity editing. Companies asserted themselves with patents on cameras and projection equipment. Cameraman industry: only one person could see the scene through camera, so directed set and everything. Motion picture patents company: patent pool, sold patents to others to use equipment or methods legally. Companies decided larger theaters would be more profitable. Mmpc: created general film company for distribution= first case of vertical integration.
