ENGFLM 0530 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Reese Witherspoon, Intertextuality, Sex Symbol
Document Summary
Eg: most powerful hollywood woman, reese witherspoon is only 29th overall. Also judged on different mediums: modeling, movie star, tv star, etc. Star as commodity:post studio era (when stars were bound to certain studios with long term contracts), starts have the freedom to create their own personal monopoly. By creating a distinctive image associated with themselves, studios will pay more to have that star/that image in their film. Celebrities are one of the main draws of a film, some movies that would never have gotten off the ground, get success b/c they market the lead star. So celebrities are: a tool to differentiate films, and to sell movie tickets. But obviously a star"s success depends on the cultural and social surroundings, some groups like them better than others. Star as text: the star is an image constructed through network of intertextuality.
