Nazi-soviet pact (august 23, 1939) and they also divide up poland, germany evacuated baltic germans (fall 1939) Initially by germans, then the soviets attack from east (september 17) and poland is overwhelmed in five weeks. Britain and france declare war within days, sitzkrieg ensues. Polish territory divided between germany and ussr: annexed into reich, incorporated into ussr, nazi general government. Ussr annexed the baltic states (summer 1940)
