Document Summary

Neurons receive electrical signals, converting it into chemical signal, then converting chemical signal back into electrical signal. Potential is expressed in volts (mili volts in a neuron) Movement of ions in solution carries electricty in nervous system. Ion channels provide a channel through which ions can move. Gated channels: need something to cause them to open. Electrical potential exists between the inside of the cell and the outside. Neurons receive electrical signals, converting it into chemical signal, then converting chemical. The inside is 70 mv relative to the outside of the cell this is the case when its literally doing nothing. To be at rest, three conditions must be satisfied. Maintain osmotic balance between inside and outside of cells. No net flux of ions across the membrane a. b. Ions move in at the exact same rate as ions moving out. Achieved by the balance of diffusive force and electrical force. Ions are not distributed equally acroos the membrane.
