Document Summary

3 layers of protective tissue surrounding cns. Dura mater, arachnoid mater, and pia mater. Subarachnoid space formed between arachnoid and pia mater. Filled with fluid and occupied by major arteries/veins. Series of interconnected, fluid-filled spaces within cns. Csf leaves ventricles via foramina into subarachnoid space. Drains out of subarachnoid space through arachnoid villi subdural sinuses general circulatory system. Hydrocephalus = ventricular system blockage in subarachnoid space. Surgically implant a shunt to drain fluid into the abdomen. Spine needle inserted in between the 3rd and 4th lumbar vertebrae. Formed by tight junctions between capillary endothelial cells within the brain/spinal cord (proteins) Maintained by astrocytes via their end feet . Helps keep blood cells, proteins, toxins, hormones, bacteria, etc. out of the brain. Small + lipid soluble molecules can cross the bbb. Not protected by the bbb and have contact with the blood. Gray matter = consists mostly of cell bodies and dendrites. In brain, white is inside, gray is outside.
