PSY 0105 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Narcissism, Egotism
Document Summary
Self-schema: templates or ideas we have for understanding the self. Multiple selves: we adapt to our social situation (breaking bad) Situational distinctiveness: different aspects of ourselves come to the forefront in different situations. If a class i am in is predominately male and i am asked to describe myself, i am more likely to use the word female to describe myself. We are often wrong when predicting how we will feel and behave in various situations. There are often aspects of ourselves we may not even know about. We underestimate our coping mechanisms and get over bad things quicker than we expect. Psychological immune system: includes strategies for reducing emotional trauma. Observing our own behavior: self-perception theory. 50% of people would notice it but only 20% did: social comparisons. Better-than-average effect: people see themselves as better than average on most positive dimensions: think we are above average when a task is easy and below average when a task is hard.
