An opposing movement was vitalism: argued that bio couldn"t explain life entirely b/c life involved soul and spirit, etc. Freud believed in mechanism, worked first in neurology comparing adult and fetal brains. Analyzed his own experiences, dreams which he thought=unconscious thoughts and desires. Studied hypnosis then free association: allow thoughts to flow freely to discover hidden associations. 1900 published a book, not just for treating patients but developing a whole theory of the mind. Comparing a wish to die and instinct for life. Freud recognizes mind as part of body, asks what the body is li,e, and derives principles of mental functioning from overall principles of psychological functioning.
