Personality psych: ch 8 trait theory: the five factor model. Big five: relates to trait research but supported by evidence. Came from factor analysis in three types of data: trait terms in the natural language, cross- cultural research, relation of trait questionnaire to other questionnaires and ratings. Trait terms in natural language: instead of naming trait by describing human behaviors, they use words that describe persons. These five factor have considerable reliability and validity and remain stable throughout adulthood. Big five: taxonomy of personality traits: mccrae/costa, five traits are more than just descriptions, but an explanation for the way people differ. Each trait is universal, everyone has in varying amounts. Personality is more stable over short periods than long periods. There are individual difference in stability during dvlt. The limit of envtl influence on change during childhood and adulthood remain to be determined. Psychopathology: characterized by extremes on one or more traits. Personality change not addressed by most trait theorists.
