Document Summary

Friendship: an intimate reciprocated positive relationship between two people. Possibly as young as age 2 but hard to tell. Evidence of friendships in infancy/toddlerhood: 12- to 18-month-olds select and prefer some over others, toddlers are 3x more likely to respond to a preferred distressed peer than a non-preferred distressed peer. These are not often conflict-free relationships, but conflict-resolution is more positive: friends actually fight more than non friends, conflict resolution is more fair and controlled. Between 6 and 8, friends are who they play with most. By middle school friendship is defined by companionship, loyalty, and similarities in interests. Children"s choice of friends: proximity, similarity in age, gender, racial/ethnic similarity, similarity of interests and behaviors. Most children age 12+ have a cell phone and social media sites/apps. The rich get richer vs. social compensation: if you already have good social skills, you can refine them online, alternatively, social media may help youth overcome social challenges.
