Document Summary

Abnormal psych ch 6: panic, anxiety, obsession, and their disorders: Historically anxiety disorders part of neuroticism disorders: because out of touch with reality. Freud thought could come out either openly or be suppressed and come out as other symptoms. Fear: instinctual response to immediate threat, fight or flight. When fear response occurs w/o normal cause=panic attack. Three components of fear: cognitive components i"m going to die , physiological components: increased heart rate, heavy breathing, behavioral components: strong urge to escape or flee. Can show just one or two, not necessarily all three. Anxiety: complex blend of unpleasant emotions and cognition. Involves negative mood, worry about possible future threats, self-preoccupation, sense of lack of control or knowledge about the future. Physioloically: chronic state of arousal as prep for escaping danger. Does not activate fight or flight but sort of pre-threat readiness. In mild forms, anxiety can be good for preparing for future.
