Self-experience discrepancy: healthy people can assimilate experiences into their sel- structure, open to experiencing events rather than interpreting them in defensive manner. Self-experience discrepancy: discrepancy between actual psychological experiences and the self"s awareness of experience (aka, when we perceive incongruence subconsciously, we don"t get the whole picture). Rogers differentiated between forms of defensive behavior, not between disorders. Rationalization: person distorts behavior to be consistent with self image. Fantasy: fantasize that you are a prince to feel adequate and powerful. Projection: individual expresses a need that is denied to awareness and behavior is viewed as consistent with self. Therapeutic conditions necessary for change:reflection: therapist just reflects back or summarizes what they hear the client saying. Client-centered therapy: nature of interpersonal relationship between therapist is critical (therapeutic climate) Congruence/genuineness: therapist is honest, open and transparent with their thoughts even if negative, no overly medical/formal facade. Unconditional positive regard: patient can explore inner self with confidence, therapist communicates genuine care for the patient.
