Capitalism is possible through contracts, legal system, etc. Calvinism = pre-destination (future has already been decided. Allows people to make more money without shame (they can still go to heaven, a sign that they are living right god is blessing you with riches) The protestant ethic and the spirit of capitalism by max weber. Power: the ability to get your way, even against the resistance of others (political) power, (status) prestige, property. Classes are shaped by power as are status groups , parties , etc. Not communities, but bases for social action: life changes in common, similar economic interests, prefer capitalism over feudalism. Page 52: the concept of class interest is an ambiguous one. Social action: determined by more than class; can also be general cultural conditions. Result of: given distribution of property, structure of concrete economic order. Weber critiques marx"s notion of class as infallible about its interests as pseudo-science . Marx puts too much emphasis on class.
