Neurons: get information and carry/transmit action potentials (individually called nerve cells) Transmits impulses up to 10 times faster than if not myelinated: nodes of ranvier: parts of axon in between the myelin sheath that have de-/polarization (no fat) Synapse: two neurons talking to each other, only one-way communication (see 4th topic: synaptic bouton: big bulbous end of axon (cns) central nervous system: deals only with brain and spinal cord. Brain: receives & processes sensory info. , initiates responses, stores memories, generates thought and emotion (grey matter, nerve cells, outside -------white matter, nerve axons, inside) Spinal cord: conducts signals to and from the brain, controls reflex activities (grey matter, nerve cells, inside. White matter, nerve axons, outside: sensory info enters at dorsal root. Cererbrospinal fluid (csf) within it, more solid on top (ventral) of spinal cord, protects and nourishes brain: acellular: no cells in it, hydrocephalus: too much water/csf on brain (treat: shunt on abdominal cavity or corticosteroids)
