BIOL 22100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 36: Biochemical Oxygen Demand, Sewage Treatment, Eutrophication

34 views1 pages

Document Summary

In human wastewater they are eliminating human pathogens. They are also trying to reduce the organic load or measure bod which is biochemical oxygen demand. When bacteria is introduced into a pond lowers the oxygen as the organisms grow. This leads to the production of micronutrients downstream. This can kill fish by a lack of o2. The first stage of a sewage treatment plant is physical settling and removing sludge. The sludge go to the bottom of the tank while water is on top. The secondary stage is blowing lots of air into to to make it aerobic as possible. This causes the bacteria to nucleate on nutrient particles creating flocs. This gets the nutrients to be used up and then the biofilms on the flocs sink to the bottom. Sludge can be dried and used as fertilizer.
