Important for redox reactions: oxidation- loss of electrons, gaining of oxygen, lose hydrogen, reduction-gain electrons, lose oxygen, gain hydrogen, leo the lion says ger, ex, calcium, magnesium, and manganese. Import for charge shielding during protein folding: potassium. Important for balancing osmolarity- solute concentration: elemental nutrients, usually inorganic, often salts, growth factors. Tricky: glucose used for energy is not a growth factor, but glucose used in cell structure (peptidoglycan) is (oxygen is not a growth factor: robust vs. fastidious, nutritionally robust- organisms that can make their own growth factors. Ex: nutritionally fastidious- organisms that can not make their own growth factors. Ex: minimal vs. enriched media, minimal media- provide basic minimal requirements for growth and only contain elemental nutrients. Only nutritionally robust organism will grow on minimal media. Nutritionally fastidious organisms will not grow on minimal media. Also called chemically defined or synthetic medium: enriched media- provide more than the minimal nutrient needs for growth.
