CHM 25500 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Electrophilic Addition, Reaction Mechanism, Pi Bond
Document Summary
Chm 255 - lecture 19 - reaction mechanisms. A reaction mechanism is the step by step process of a reaction. There are many possible organic reactions, but only a few reaction mechanisms. Reactions between electrophiles and nucleophiles involve the transfer of electrons from the nucleophile to the electrophile. In other words, electrons move from the electron rich site to the electron deficient site. If a species has a negative charge, it is likely to be a nucleophile. If a species has atoms with lone pairs of electrons it is likely to be a nucleophile. If a compound contains pi bonds it is likely to be a nucleophile since the pi bond is a very electron dense area. If a species has a positive charge, it is likely to be an electrophile. If a compound has an electron-deficient site, as in a polar bond, it is likely to be an electrophile.
