Although there are other classifications the koppen classification is the most widely used. Named after russian born german climatologist wladimir koppen first published in 1884 and revised in 1918 and 1936 by koppen himself it divided the climate into five groups. Divisions were made based on average monthly and annual values of temperature and precipitation. Koppen originally made these divisions based on the limits of certain plants associations. Humid tropical no winters, mean temperatures above 18 c (64 f). Humid mid-latitude, mild winters average temperatures between -3 c (27 f) and 18 c (64 f). Humid mid-latitude, severe winters average temperatures between -3 c (27 f) and 10 c (50 f). Polar no summers, mean temperatures below 10 c (50 f). A couple of examples of natural forces on the climate that have caused (cid:272)hanges in(cid:272)lude (cid:272)hanges in earth"s or(cid:271)it and its spin, plate te(cid:272)toni(cid:272)s, and volcanic events.
