Document Summary

Ideally, we want to preserve populations and communities in the wild using in situ (on-site) preservation. This is where they do the best. In situ preservation is no longer an option for some species. Species can be maintained under artificial conditions under human supervision to prevent extinction. Ex situ populations can be released in to the wild to augment in situ conservation efforts. Research on captive populations provides information that can be used in conservation (biology, ecology) Ex situ populations reduce collections from the wild. Captive-bred individuals on display can help on education the public about conservation. Limited opportunity to learn skills needed in the wild. In the case of gene banks, living populations are necessary to pass on non-genetic learned behaviors. Ex situ tends to only save particular species whereas in situ saves whole ecosystems. Focus mostly on threatened and endangered species but increasingly include other species for education. Captive breeding of endangered species in the last resort.
