FNR 52600 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Forensic Entomology, Flesh Fly, Calliphoridae
Document Summary
Diverse (found in almost all terrestrial habitats, small, wings, metamorphosis) Types of flies: blow flies: first to arrive. Often metallic or with yellow crinkly hair on side of thorax. Important larvae aspects: mouth hooks, spiracles (external openings connected to the trachea for breathing), anterior, posterior. Distinguish 2nd and 3rd instars by their posterior spiracles. Pupa is within a puparium (hardened skin of last instar: flesh flies: first/second to arrive. Common species has red at tip of abdomen: house flies: around filth/indoors. Grey flies (smaller than flesh flies and without a checkered abdomen: coffin flies: found indoors/buried remains. Dark veins in the front part of the wing. Small flies look like fruit flies: cheese skippers: arrive late during protein fermentation, drain flies: found in sewers/drains. Larvae look drastically different than adults: beetles (coleoptera): Types of beetles: burying beetles and carrion beetles. Feed on carrion and larvae on the body- adults must feed on more than just carrion.
