Document Summary

Tiny plastic beads: much smaller than 1mm. Washed into terrestrial surface waters and oceans. Can contaminate food chain: possible health effects. Higher than oceans: especially lake erie. High porosity- poorly packed clay particles which do not fit tightly. Rounded, well-sorted grains do not fit tightly. Low porosity- crystals in granite which fit tightly. Sorting = measure of range of grain sizes. Well sorted= limited range of grain size. Less sorted= can have big grains and very small grains (can mix better and fit more tightly) Aquifer- a large body of permeable, saturated material through which groundwater can flow well enough to yield significant volumes of water to wells or springs. Unconfined- open to earth"s surface and to infiltration. Artesian- water rises in pipe (maybe to surface) Pores in upper parts are generally unsaturated: unsaturated zone. In lower layer pores are saturated with groundwater: saturated zone. The top of this saturated zone is called a water table.
