Goes down to basic training in alabama and meets zelda sera (southern belle) She wants him to have a stable job so he goes off and writes a book and it becomes an overnight bestseller. Book name this side of paradise 1920. Even before america joined the war, he was an ambulance driver. He wanted to improve society and change the world (idealism) His ambulance got blown up during the war, he spent the rest of the war recovering. After the war, his idealism is dead. Writes book called the sun also rises . Features a guy who got injured in war and he is disillusioned. Its about dead people, people who arent doing anything. He went to war bc of idealism and courage bc thats what he thought it was about and then realized that there is nothing like that in war.
