Document Summary

Chapter 11 dna: the molecule of heredity. By the late 1800s, scientists had a limited knowledge of genes: genes: carry heritable information in discrete units, chromosomes: made of deoxyribonucleic acid (dna) and protein. They did not know what genes were made of. Transformed bacteria revealed the link between genes and dna: frederick griffith: worked with two strains of streptococcus pneumonia bacteria in the 1920s. S-strain caused pneumonia when injected into mice, killing them (pathogenic) R-strain did not cause pneumonia when injected (non-pathogenic) Mixture of living r-strain and heat ill s-strain causes pneumonia. When the s-strain was killed and injected into mice, it did not cause disease. Molecular mechanism of transformation: dna fragments are transported into the bacterium, and dna fragment is the later incorporated into the chromosome. Dna is composed of four nucleotides: nucleotides: chains of small subunits which dna is made up of (monomer that forms dna -> nucleic acid, three components of each nucleotide.
