PS 242 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Human Behavior, Behavior Modification, Operant Conditioning
Document Summary
Everything we do can be formed by a contingency. Consequences of behavior: positive reinforcement: increases positive behavior. Might not be a reward but we still want it. What effect behavior has on a person. Maintain a better relationship: punishment: anything is added, decrease behavior. The effect only lasts as long as the threat exists. Example: kids who are hit move out of home quickly. Uses punishment in positive reinforcement: extinction: decreases behavior by withholding reinforcement. One minute for each year of life: negative reinforcement: strengthen behavior. Example: close window to keep cold air out. Successive approximations: breaking something down into smaller pieces. Example: teaching a child to read piece by piece. Categories of reinforcement: primary: value you don"t need to learn. Learn through biology food, water, sex, etc: secondary/conditioned: things that are learned. Human behavior is shaped through conditioned reinforcement. The effect that things have on you. Discriminative stimulus: indicates reinforcement is available if it is earned.
