Notes in the book for chapter 2 and 3. The nervous system has specialized pathways that are adapted for different functions. Afferent nerves- carries information to the brain and spinal cord. They communicate senses like being tired or hungry to the brain. Neural networks- nerve cells that integrate sensory input and motor output. Example: when you read something, the input from your eyes is transmitted to your brain. Central nervous system- made up of the brain and the spinal cord. More than 99 % of our nerves are located here. Peripheral nervous system- network that connects the brain and spinal cord to the other parts of the body. It brings information to and from the brain and spinal cord to carry out information. Somatic nervous system- sensory nerves- conveys information from the skin and muscles to the cns about pain. Autonomic nervous system- takes messages to and from the body"s internal organs, like breathing and digestion.
