PS 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Sensory Nerve, Color Vision, Sensory System
Document Summary
Sensation- the process of receiving stimulus energies from the eternal environment and transforming those energies into neural energy. Perception- the process of receiving stimulus energies from the external environment and transforming those energies into neural energy. Bottom up processing- sensory receptors register information about the external environment and send it up to the brain for interpretation. Top down processing- starts with cognitive processing at the higher level of the brain: we begin with some sense of what is happening. Sensory receptors- specialized cells that detect stimulus information and transmit it to sensory nerves and the brain. Absolute threshold- minimum amount of stimulus energy that a person can detect. Selective attention- focusing on a specific aspect of experience whole ignoring others. Intentional blindness- refers to the failure to detect unexpected events when attention is engaged by task. Perceptual set- a predisposition or readiness to perceive something in a particular way.
