PS 272 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Vitus, Operant Conditioning, Classical Conditioning
Document Summary
In the summer and early fall of 1693, 17 women and 2 men were taken by cart to. Gallows hill near salem, ma and hanged as witches. Principal accusers of these witches were a group of young girls: betty (9) and cousin abigail (11) were the first to show the symptoms of a strange malady. They sat motionlessly and stared fixedly at some invisible object. Over time, the witch trials developed a common pattern. One of the girls, in her fits and convulsions, would claim to see the spectral form of a villager tormenting her: this spectral evidence was enough for the judges to render a verdict of guilty. Rebecca nurse, 71, demonstrated her witchcraft when a group of girls imitated whatever move she made at her trial. To understand any new phenomena, we tend to apply ideas that are useful in some more familiar domain.
