Document Summary
The ethnographic method: spending a year or more in another culture, living with other people and learning about their customs (long term immersive research) Direct observations, different conversations, formal interviews, genealogical method, details from informants, in depth life histories, emic (native/researcher acting), problem oriented work, longitudinal research. Participant observation: take field notes during and then review it afterwards. Not controlled/manipulated by environment, need to participate in their culture, common humanity. Direct observation: record in diary and field notes all basic aspects of cultural diversity need to be recorded even if so fundamental that native people take it for granted. Initial impressions should also be recorded, valuable even though all seems weird at first. Conversations, interviews & formal schedules: structured interview or less formal ones. Talk to people in different stages; learn their language gradually; starts with names then later complex questions & understanding. Interview schedule is more go with the flow personal questions and answers, writing it all down.
