PSY-33 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Voodoo Science, Psychoticism, Novelty Seeking
Document Summary
Research methods illustrated: correlational designs ii: scatterplots, correlations, and the alleged voodoo science of fmri studies. Scatterplots/scattergram: show the scatter or spread of data. Can tell us the direction of the correlation, whether its pos, or neg. Thickness of cloud or scatter of dots tells us the strength of the correlation. More scatterplot looks like circle, the less the two variables are related. The more it looks like an oval, the more strongly they"re related. Perfect correlation looks like straight line and zero correlation is. The thinner a cloud, the more closely related the 2 variables are and the stronger random dots spread out the correlation. Linear regression: estimates our best guess of how we can predict y values from x values. Results are only as good as the measures. 3 primary temperaments (or clusters of related personality traits): Extraversion: pos. emotion, reward sensitivity, social rewards, sociability, approach. Neuroticism: neg emotion, anxiety, punishment sensitivity, withdrawal.
