Major depressive disorder: an extreme form of depression that satis es the number of symptoms required for the category of depression to apply. The presence of 5 symptoms for at least 2 weeks. Either depressed mood or loss of interest and pleasure must be one of the ve. Sad, depressed mood, most of the day, nearly every day. Loss of interest and pleasure in all, or almost all activities. Insomnia, not falling asleep initially, not returning to sleep after awakening, early morning awakening, or desire to sleep most of the time. Shift in activity level: lethargic (psychomotor retardation) or agitated (psychomotor agitation) Poor appetite & weight loss or increased appetite and weight gain. Negative self-concept, self-blame, feelings of worthlessness and guilt. Complaints or evidence of dif culty in concentrating, slowed thinking, indecisiveness. Dsm-5 incorporates dimensional ratings of the severity, frequency, and duration of the symptoms.
