Change can only be measured across points in time. Identity and change are central to developing dynamic theory. Does not look at unique events and changes. The event contains the information about our lives. About the situation that occurs, not set for specific dates for everyone. Stage stage and not present after the stage. Duration of time characterized by a particular property not present before that. Stages have a beginning point marked by an event or transition. Ending or exit transition event marks the end of the stage. Many contain intense adjustment which leads to high stress. E. g. , birth of a child, marriage, retirement. At any point, always possibility of a stage transition. How long you have been in that stage. The social norms favouring one type of transition over another. Individuals think their pathway is their choice. Historical and random factors arise to change or modify our pathways. Compare data on family life among different kinds of societies.
