PHIL 307 Lecture 13: 2-10-16
Document Summary
The state should not take a position on what is good for people, etc. What"s the principle that separates the values that the state may promote from the values that it may not promote. The way to answer this question is to look at the arguments of the neutrality principle and to take our cue from the reasons that are given that we should accept the neutrality principle. If that"s your view, then the way of looking at the conception of the good is to look at its value strength. The only sort of values that the government should abstain from promoting is the ones that would create such a conflict. Many of those who oppose the neutrality principle oppose it because they support a promotion of what is good through perfectionsim. Some trace activities / modes of association are objectively better than others.
