PHIL 307 Lecture 29: 4-8-16
Document Summary
Various parts of this construct support other things that we believe. It makes the best sense of what we believe. What we need to do is cast the net more widely and really look at this idea. Part of a way we test a theory is by its consequences. We"d have to see if the intuition is wrong in previous arguments, etc. We"d also have to test the principles that emerge from the original position. If we can get the whole thing to really stand up to scrutiny, then we have reached equilibrium. What are the intuitions that support rawls"s design of the original position. The things they are supposed to be ignorant of are morally ambiguous and things that should influence decisions. They take facts like whether or not a person was born into money out of the equation. Given the principles, we draw conclusions from the principles in order to test them against our intuitions.
